Douglas Wood & Associates, Inc. offers to its clients the full range of structural engineering services for buildings and other structures. The offered services include:
New Construction
Design Phases:
Consultation, coordination, research, assistance with evaluation of alternative systems, collaboration relative to sustainable building design, analysis, design and preparation of construction documents (including drawings, specifications, Special Inspection Plans and other appropriate documents).Consultation, coordination, research, assistance with evaluation of alternative systems, collaboration relative to sustainable building design, analysis, design and preparation of construction documents (including drawings, specifications, Special Inspection Plans and other appropriate documents).
Permitting Phase:
Submittal of construction documents, preparation of submittal documents, and responses to building officials’ review comments..
Construction Phase:
Assistance with review of construction bids, review of structural shop drawings, and of other required structural submittals (such as concrete test reports, soil test reports, material test reports, mill tests, welder qualifications, certifications, etc.), consultations with contractor, assistance with owner change orders, observation or inspection (including Special Inspection and Threshold Building ) of structural systems and review of contractor draw requests for structural systems.
Renovations and/or Additions
In addition to the services offered for new construction, services offered for renovations and additions include review of available documents for the existing construction, evaluation of the condition of existing construction (including visual observation and recommendations for and review of results for testing of existing structural materials, members and/or systems) and analysis of existing systems (within the limitations of the available information).
Evaluation of Existing Construction
These services may be requested by buyers of existing buildings; insurance companies or building owners relative to insurance claims; and attorneys, building owners or insurance companies relative to construction lawsuits. The possible services are the same as indicated above for the evaluation of existing structures relative to renovations and additions.
Services offered under this category also include preparation of appropriate reports, “appraiser” and “umpire” services for insurance claims, forensic engineering and testimony in deposition, mediations, arbitrations and court hearings.
Building Types
Douglas Wood & Associates, Inc. provides structural engineering services to its clients for all types of building uses, including residential, commercial, theatrical, recreational, industrial, institutional, educational, municipal, aeronautical and military. Project sizes range from minor repairs and renovations to large-scale construction.
Douglas Wood & Associates, Inc. also provides structural engineering services for miscellaneous structures such as retaining walls, fences, signs, screens, swimming pools, decorative fountains, docks, seawalls, gazebos, trellises, equipment foundations, and some civil structures such as pump stations, tanks, pedestrian bridges, and building-like transportation facilities, such as airport, seaport, bus and train terminals, mass transit stations and toll booths.
Douglas Wood & Associates, Inc. also has developed a market niche in providing structural engineering services relative to historic buildings. The firm’s completed work includes many evaluations of and restorations, renovations and additions to historic buildings. These many projects include several of the most well known historic buildings in South Florida, such as Vizcaya, Biltmore Hotel, Deering Estate, Miracle Theater, Colony Theater, Fort Dallas and Wagner Homestead. Through his many historic projects, along with his many investigations of older buildings for buyers and insurance companies, Mr. Wood possess an exceptional depth of knowledge relative to historic building materials, systems and practices.
Douglas Wood & Associates, Inc. does not provide structural engineering services for vehicular bridges or highways.
Structural System Types
Douglas Wood & Associates, Inc. provides structural engineering services relative to all the structural systems generally used in building construction. These include reinforced concrete, precast concrete, post-tensioned concrete, composite concrete systems, masonry, reinforced masonry, structural steel, composite steel and concrete, cold-formed steel (decks, studs, joists, and trusses) and timber. When appropriate, services relative to other materials or systems may be offered, including aluminum and other metals.
Where appropriate, in conformance with the rules of the Florida Board of Professional Engineers, Douglas Wood & Associates, Inc. will delegate engineering services for certain systems to Specialty Engineers. Usually, these systems are manufactured, prefabricated and/or proprietary systems. They may include prefabricated wood trusses, prefabricated steel joists, precast concrete, prestressed concrete and pre-engineered steel buildings. Geotechnical engineering is also generally performed by other engineers.
Services Other Than Structural Engineering
If desired by the client, Douglas Wood & Associates, Inc. will act as prime consultant and subcontract services outside of its areas of expertise. Such subcontracted services may include architecture, geotechnical engineering, civil engineering, MEP engineering, permit expedition services or other appropriate services. All subcontractors are required to maintain appropriate licenses, certifications and insurance coverages.
Services Not Provided
Douglas Wood & Associates, Inc. provides only structural engineering services for building and other structures, as described above, and subcontracted services, also as described above.
Douglas Wood & Associates, Inc. does not conduct any construction work.
