Douglas Wood & Associates, Inc. was founded in 1993 by Mr. Douglas Wood. At that time, Mr. Wood had completed more than fifteen years of successful experience in structural engineering and engineering management. All of that experience was gained with his employment at one large A/E firm in the Miami area. Mr. Wood began his association with that firm as an entry-level engineer after his graduation with honors from the University of Wyoming in 1977. Within four years, Mr. Wood satisfied his experience requirements, passed the NCEES structural engineering exam and became a registered structural engineer in Florida.
While always deeply committed to his career as a structural engineer, Mr. Wood supplemented his education by part-time attendance at the University of Miami School of Architecture, from which he graduated with honors in 1985. By 1988, Mr. Wood satisfied his architectural experience requirements, passed the NCARB exams and became a registered architect in Florida. While Mr. Wood’s focus has always remained structural engineering, he has maintained his architectural registration. This supplement to his education, experience and credentials gives him a unique appreciation and understanding of the needs and desires of the firm’s clients.
While associated with his previous firm, Mr. Wood gained valuable experience in a wide range of building types and structural engineering services. Mr. Wood proved his value and rose quickly in seniority. In 1989, he was placed in charge of the building engineering division and became the firm’s youngest ever Vice President. By 1991, he became the firm’s youngest ever President, in charge of all three of the firms divisions (architecture, building engineering and civil engineering), its three offices and its business and financial affairs. Within one year of his becoming president, the firm’s previous history of substantial financial loss performance was transformed to profit.
After two years of successful performance as president, but without an ownership share, Mr. Wood decided to found his own firm and concentrate on providing the best structural engineering services available. The firm was busy with significant work right from its start, and within a year of its inception, the firm employed one registered engineer, two engineer interns and one clerical worker. Over the following years, Douglas Wood & Associates, Inc. has performed extremely well, and its size and revenue have grown steadily along with its reputation and stature.
Through the years, Douglas Wood & Associates, Inc. has provided services for the full range of building types and sizes. The firm has also developed a reputation for its expertise in work with historical buildings and unique building structures.
Robert Santiago, P.E. (Master's degree in structural engineering with honors from City College of New York) joined the firm in 2004 and was named Vice President in 2006. Mr. Santiago adds to the firm the value of his more than twenty years of structural engineering experience (including numerous notable projects) in and around New York City.
Today, after almost fifteen years in business, Douglas Wood & Associates, Inc. has sixteen full-time employees (including three registered engineers, four engineer interns and five graduate engineers), and annual revenues exceeding 1.5 million dollars. The firm enjoys an ever-expanding reputation for creative solutions to difficult project challenges, thorough service, technical excellence and unquestioned professionalism and ethics.
